The Hard Truth About Why People Don't Support Local Businesses
January to March is like a local business graveyard. 🪦
We see tons of places close this time of year, and its already started just a short 15 days into 2025.
Its hard to watch and sad to see SUCH talented people shut down after the passion and countless hour they’ve put in. It’s disheartening for our community and can make you wonder about the future of the region.
But it doesn’t have to be this way…
Local businesses - It’s not enough to just exist.
You can have the best coffee in town, the coolest boutique, or the most innovative service, but if no one knows about you, how are they supposed to support you?
Here's the thing: people aren’t wandering down the street with Sherlock Holmes glasses on hoping to discover hidden gems. (Well our team is, but most people aren't!)
People are bombarded with distractions, endless choices, and dozens of competitors vying for their attention. If you’re not actively putting your business out there, most people will never even think of you—let alone spend their money with you.
I say this with ALL the love and respect for local businesses and local business owners (as one myself)…
Local businesses love to say, “Support small businesses!” while expecting people to just magically know they exist. Spoiler alert: shouting into the void (or letting a couple of Instagram posts to your < 10k audience do all the work) isn’t going to grow your business. Sure, your grandma, your best friend, and your loyal customers might remember you, but what about the hundreds of people in your community who have never even heard of you because you’re stuck in “Hide and Seek Marketing” mode?
It’s 2025—visibility is EVERYTHING.
And please, let’s stop with the “advertising doesn’t work” reasoning. No, it’s not that advertising doesn’t work—it’s that you’re competing with billions of pieces of content every single day - we get it. 😥 But that means that a single, half-hearted post isn’t enough.
If you really care about growing your business, you need consistent, smart, and engaging advertising—whether that’s leveraging social media, local campaigns, event marketing, or even old-school tactics. Whatever works!!
Customers aren’t mind readers. They need to be reminded that you’re there…
…and reminded again, and again, and again.
You expect people to support you, but what are you doing to make that easy for them? If all they see are your competitors showing up in their social feeds, Google searches, and local events, guess where their dollars are going? You need to meet people where they are—whether it’s online or offline—and compel them to care.
The truth is, just existing is the bare minimum. Everyone “exists.” If you want the community to rally around you, if you want those #ShopLocal dollars to come your way, you need to give people a reason to know you, love you, and choose you.
Advertising isn’t an expense—it’s an investment in your future and your relevance. Its a pre-requisite for success in business.
Because if you’re not showing up and telling your story, there’s another business out there that’s more than happy to take your place as the community’s go-to spot.
